Nurses at two West Virginia hospitals to take part in national day of action

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Registered nurses at two West Virginia hospitals will take part in protests on Tuesday as part of a national effort.

Nurses will be picketing at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A press conference also will be held at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield at 4 p.m.

The events are part of a national day of action involving strikes, pickets and protests by Community Health Systems (CHS) RNs at hospitals in four states Tuesday.

The nurses are protesting repeated multiple violations of federal law by CHS-affiliated hospitals and the failure of CHS executives to address widespread concerns about patient safety and cuts in patient services. They are also pushing for more economic and workplace fairness.

More than 1,400 RNs at hospitals in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are expected to be impacted by the national day of action.

CHS, the second largest for-profit hospital chain in the U.S., is currently under federal investigation for multiple violations.
