Man originally charged in disappearance of 2 Lewis County women, back in custody

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — One of the men originally charged in connection with the 1999 disappearance of two Lewis County women is back behind bars on a new charge.

David Hughes turned himself in Wednesday and was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery of the two women.

Hughes was previously charged with allegedly being involved in the robbery, kidnapping and murder of Maxine Stalnaker and Mary Friend on Dec. 1, 1999. Two other men, Joseph Metz and Charles Steven Freeman, were also charged in the crime.

On Nov. 8, those charges were dropped against Hughes, Metz and Freeman. However, authorities said the investigation was ongoing and that the charges could be refiled at a later date.

Hughes is currently being held at the Central Regional Jail. His bond has been set at $50,000.
