Police identify body found in Elk River

GASSAWAY, W.Va. — Authorities in Braxton County have identified the woman found dead in the Elk River earlier this week as that of Barba Chapman.

Deputies said the 82-year-old was found Monday at about 11 a.m. near the bridge going into Gassaway.

An autopsy is currently being conducted on her body by the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Deputies at this point do not believe her death is suspicious.

Investigators said a family member found Chapman’s body.
