Slip sliding away

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Division of Highways is concerned about possible hillside slips and slides during the weekend across West Virginia as the rain and cold temperatures continue.

DOH spokesperson Carrie Bly said the warmer temperatures from earlier this week don’t help the situation.

“When we have that kind of freeze-thaw effect that makes our hillsides very loose and there’s a high potential that more slips and slides could occur,” Bly said.

Heavy rain Friday caused water to cover roads in some traditionally low-lying areas. The DOH did decide to close Little Coal River Road near Alum Creek in Lincoln County because of a slip situation.

“The last couple of days it’s been getting worse and then there was a water main break in that area and then the rain on top of that has made the road so weak that now it’s starting to slip over the hillside,” Bly said.

Residents who live in that area of Lincoln County do have an alternate route to take.
