West Virginia woman sentenced to life in prison after drowning son

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A Berkeley County woman was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison after drowning her 2-year-old son in the bathtub of a Pittsburgh hotel.

Sharon Flanagan

Sharon Flanagan, 35, of Inwood, was sentenced Monday for the July 2012 crime. She was convicted of first-degree murder earlier this year. Her sentence handed down Monday affords no chance for parole.

Flanagan’s son, Steven, Flanagan died five days after the incident. His father, also named Steven, testified during Monday’s sentencing.

“All I can truly say about it, is why? There was no cause for it from start to finish,” Flanagan said.

Sharon Flanagan did not speak during the sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors said she killed her son because she was unhappy her husband had been granted 70 percent custody of him during a bitter divorce.

The drowning occurred July 1, 2012, at the Best Western Parkway Center Inn in Green Tree.
