CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The leader of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce says an ad being run by a national political action committee is inaccurate.

Steve Roberts said Wednesday on MetroNews Talkline the ad in question is being funded by the House Majority PAC which heavily supports President Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The ad claims West Virginia Third District Congressman Nick Rahall is backed by the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“The ad says ‘Endorsed by your local chamber of commerce’,” Roberts said. “The local chambers of commerce have not made an endorsement in this race in this election.”

Roberts said he became involved when he was contacted by many of the local chambers asking which local bodies were backing Rahall’s reelection.

“Our point of view is, if the local chambers have not endorsed, it’s probably best not to say they have,” Roberts said.

Roberts added the West Virginia Chamber has lent its name to an ad by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce which supports Rahall’s potential opponent in next year’s general election, Republican State Senator Evan Jenkins. Although over the years the Chamber had supported Rahall’s campaign, Roberts indicated that probably will not be the case next year.

“Every election is a new election and every candidacy is a new candidacy,” Roberts said. “We now have a rather lengthy record on which to base our endorsement and our support.”

The reality is that since Roberts has become Chamber President he has been an exclusive mouthpiece for the coal industry. All other industries large and small are second class.

In 1993 the City of Charleston adopted an anti-gun Ordnance, the then Director of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce led the Committee in support for the Ordnance. Where was the Chamber objectivity then?

Ask any small business owner what the State Chamber of Commerce has done for them. It won't take long for them to respond as it doesn't take long to say "little to nothing". The State Chamber is nothing but a puppet for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As long as you are upfront about it, that is fine. Unfortunately, Mr. Roberts often pretends to be working on behalf of the small business owners in the State, which only makes me skeptical of most of what he has to say.

If the local chamber have not made an endorsement then the ad is inaccurate. There is no hypocrisy on supporting a candidate when it looks like he will win and then supporting his opponent when it looks like he will lose.

What a joke this guy is at the Chamber. The last year makes a difference but not the 30 years before it? WV isn't buying it.

Thanks to Steve for pointing out his own organization's hypocrisy.
I'm sure it's no coincidence that Jenkins is a State Chamber member and Medical Association lobbyist.
