Staten on Gonzaga’s rally: ‘We just broke down on defense’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Point guard Juwan Staten had no delusions about where West Virginia lost Tuesday night’s game to No. 20 Gonzaga.

“We had the game right where wanted it … we just broke down on defense,” Staten said.

Gonzaga scored on 16 of its final 24 possessions, rallying from 10 down in the second half to turn back West Virginia’s upset bid 80-76. The Mountaineers have lost three games in the past 14 days to teams currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25—all by single digits.

“It definitely lets us know we’re right there,” Staten said. “I feel like I’ve said that a million times—we’re right there. Obviously it’s just something that we’re not quite doing right to get us over the hump. I really felt like this was the game.”
