BECKLEY, W.Va. — A four-day law enforcement blitz aimed at verifying compliance of registered sex offenders results in over 50 arrests.
The law enforcement sweep found 54 out of 317 registered sex offenders out of compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
The initiative, known as Operation Lump of Coal, was conducted in five southern West Virginia counties by multiple state and local law enforcement agencies. It was initiated by members of the West Virginia State Police, in cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Service’s CUFFED Division.
The sweep was held Dec. 9-12 and covered Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, Summers and Wyoming counties.
A similar compliance sweep, known as Operation Coal Dust, was held back in August and covered Boone, Lincoln and Logan counties. The sweep checked on 209 registered sex offenders and found a total of 10 individuals out of compliance.
