WVU women dominate Marshall 82-51

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Asya Bussie, Taylor Palmer and Bria Holmes scored 16 points each and West Virginia nearly doubled Marshall in rebounding to claim a ninth consecutive win in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic, 82-51 on Saturday.

West Virginia (8-1), which led throughout, sank 10-of-20 shots from 3-point range, including 4-of-8 shooting by Palmer.

Palmer scored 10 first-half points as West Virginia built a 44-22 lead.

“For the first eight minutes, we came out and played extremely hard defensively,” coach Mike Carey said. “That’s what we do—we play hard defense and then we get our offense going. Our defense dictates everything and gets us moving. After that, we hit some 3s. I thought they were sagging on Asya Bussie. She moved well inside, and that’s a good sign.”

The Thundering Herd (3-5) shot only 30 percent. Marshall was led in scoring by Norrisha Victrum with 13 points, Erica Woods with 11 and Chelsey Romero with eight. Woods and Suporia Dickens each pulled down five rebounds.

Bussie was the game’s MVP adding five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 28 minutes.

West Virginia guard Christal Caldwell added eight points on 2-of-12 shooting but grabbed a season-best 10 rebounds as WVU held a 53-27 edge.

“Overall, the girls played hard and they played as a team,” Carey said. “It was good to have Bria Holmes. I didn’t know how much I was going to play her, but she played pretty well. We’re pretty deep. We’ve got people who can play different positions.”

The Mountaineer outscored Marshall 40-19 in bench points.
