Overturned car nearly goes into Kanawha River

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A car traveling south on the West Virginia Turnpike almost went into the Kanawha River on Friday afternoon.

The driver lost control of the car about 1:30 p.m. at the Malden exit near Charleston. The vehicle rolled over, crashed through a guardrail and careened toward the river. Emergency crews said trees on the riverbank kept the car out of the water.

Three people were taken to a Charleston hospital with injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. The car had a Michigan license plate.

All southbound lanes had re-opened by 3 p.m.
