Large fire clears Oak Hill community

LOCHGELLY, W.Va. — Residents living in a community just outside of Oak Hill were allowed back into their homes early Saturday morning after a large fire at a vehicle-recycling center was brought under control.

It took several Fayette County fire departments to battle the blaze at Auto Recycling in Lochgelly near the Fayette County Industrial Park. The fire was reported at approximately 7:30 p.m. Firefighters cleared the scene at 1:10 a.m. Saturday. Nine of Fayette County’s 11 fire departments spent time on the scene.

Residents were asked to evacuate after it was learned there were propane and oxygen tanks in the building. There were reports of those tanks spewing but no major explosions.

One injury was reported. The business owner suffered minor burns when he entered the burning building in an attempt to save some heavy equipment.

An investigation into what started the fire is underway.
