Records fall on solstice Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The first day of winter in West Virginia didn’t feel anything like it. The National Weather Service reported several high temperature marks for Dec. 21 were broken.

The official high in Charleston Saturday was recorded at 75 degrees edging the old record of 74 set back in 1990. The NWS also noted record highs in Huntington 75 (old record 74), Elkins 74  (old record 69) and Beckley 67 (old record 65).

Temperatures are forecasted to reach the 70s in some locations again Sunday with heavier rain expected. Colder temperatures are in the forecast for Christmas week with the chance for snow in some areas Monday into Tuesday.
