WVU women rout Elon for 11th straight win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia women’s basketball team won its 11th consecutive game and closed out the nonconference schedule with an 89-56 victory over Elon at the WVU Coliseum.

Asya Bussie compiled 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in 28 minutes for the Mountaineers (11-1), while Bria Holmes added 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

West Virginia held Elon’s leading scorer Zora Stephenson—who entered Sunday’s game averaging 13.4 points per game— scoreless in 31 minutes.

The Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the field, to 37 percent for the Phoenix (5-7).

Averee Fields matched her season-high with 15 points, going 6-of-6 shooting. She added five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block.

“Averee is getting us some scoring and she can do that for us,” WVU coach Mike Carey said. “They are either going to help off Averee or help off Asya and that leaves one of them wide open, so we have to be able to score, and Averee has been able to do that for us the last couple games.”

Taylor Palmer rounded out the top four scorers for WVU with 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Phoenix had three players in double figures, led by Sam Coffer and Kelsey Harris with 11 points apiece. Freshman forward Jenifer Rhodes added 10 points.

The Mountaineers open Big 12 Conference play at Kansas on Thursday and close the two-game road trip at No. 11 Oklahoma State on Saturday.
