MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A look at just some of the top high school stories and championships won from around the state for the 2013 calendar year.

RANK FLASHBACK OF 2013 IN WEST VIRGINIA HS ATHLETICS
1 MARTINSBURG FOOTBALL 4-PEATS
NOTES: Martinsburg completed in 2013 what no other Class AAA program has been able to do – win four straight state championships. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 13-1 record after beating Huntington in the state title game, 9-7. Martinsburg will begin the drive for five in 2014.
2 BRIDGEPORT WINS AA FOOTBALL TITLE, SNAPS WAYNE’S 36-GAME WINNING STREAK
NOTES: Bridgeport claimed the 2013 Class AA football state championship with a 14-13 win over two-time defending champion Wayne. In the process, the Indians snapped Wayne’s 36-game winning streak, a game away from sole possession of the state record.
3 INSTATE D-I PLAYERS ON FOOTBALL SIGNING DAY
NOTES: George Washington’s Ryan Switzer and Spring Valley’s Elijah Wellman headlined the 2013 high school football products from the state, but there were several other players overall that landed with D-I programs on scholarship as well. On signing day, seven players signed in Switzer with UNC, Wellman with WVU, GW’s Jordan Clay with Air Force, Martinsburg’s Cedric Brown with Ohio, GW’s Dustin Crouser with UNC Charlotte, Morgantown’s Blaine Stewart with James Madison and Martinsburg’s Eugene German with UNC Charlote. Cabell Midland’s David Gaydosz became an eighth man on the list going D-I as he signed later with Coastal Carolina.
4 MARTINSBURG WINS AAA BASKETBALL TITLE, GRANTHAM SIGNS WITH CLEMSON
NOTES: Martinsburg proved to be the team to beat on the boys basketball court as well in 2013 as the Bulldogs beat Woodrow Wilson in the AAA state championship, 57-52. More drama, though, surrounded Bulldogs’ star Donte Grantham as he ultimately chose to attend Hargrave Military Academy for 2012-2013 instead of other offers to play D-I right away, including WVU. Ultimately, Grantham committed to and signed with Clemson’s 2014 basketball recruiting class.
5 TUG VALLEY CLAIMS 2ND STRAIGHT BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTES: Tug Valley became the first public school to win the Class A boys basketball state championship since 2001 by knocking off Charleston Catholic in the 2013 title game, 58-41. The Panthers, who won the 2012 AA title before reclassification, finished the year with a 25-3 overall record.
6 MADONNA TAKES CLASS A FOOTBALL TITLE, COMIS NAMED METRONEWS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
NOTES: Madonna finished off the 2013 football season with a perfect 14-0 record by beating Greenbrier West in the championship game, 24-14. Blue Dons’ quarterback Ross Comis was named the MetroNews Player of the Year for his 3,630 total offensive yards and 57 combined touchdowns (1,942 rushing and 35 TDs, 1,688 passing and 22 TDs). The senior signal caller had just four interceptions on the season.
7 MORGANTOWN’S CHAZZY THOMAS WINS KENNEDY AWARD
NOTES: Morgantown senior running back Chazzy Thomas was given the Kennedy Award by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. He led the Mohigans and all of Class AAA with 2,108 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns on 174 carries.
8 FIFTH STRAIGHT TITLE FOR HUNTINGTON ST. JOE GIRLS BASKETBALL
NOTES: Huntington St. Joe continued its dominance of Class A in girls high school basketball as the Irish beat St. Marys in the title game, 73-32, for their fifth straight championship.
9 BLUEFIELD WINS AA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTES: Bluefield collected its first boys basketball championship since 1996 by beating Fairmont Senior in the title game, 63-43. The Beavers returned a majority of that talent for 2013-2014.
10 PARKERSBURG SOUTH TAKES AAA GIRLS BASKETBALL TITLE
NOTES: Parkersburg South won its first girls basketball title since 2006 with a 58-34 win over Logan in the 2013 Class AAA championship game. The Patriots returned almost the entirety of that championship squad for 2013-2014.
11 BRIDGEPORT WINS FIRST GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTES: Bridgeport won its first girls basketball state championship in 2013 by beating Westside in the title game 44-27. Senior guard Miki Glenn’s 22 points and 10 rebounds led the way in the win.
12 HEDGESVILLE WINS FIRST BASEBALL TITLE
NOTES: Hedgesville won its first ever state baseball championship by beating Cabell Midland 4-2 in the Class AAA title game. Hedgesville defeated Parkersburg South 6-3 to advance to that championship game.
13 DRAMATICS FOR HOOVER’S AA BASEBALL TITLE
NOTES: Herbert Hoover rallied twice to win another state baseball championship. The Huskies beat Fairmont Senior 7-5 in the championship game, scoring six times with two outs in the sixth. To get into the title game, Hoover needed a 7th inning walk-off win over Independence after trailing by a run heading into the inning.
14 IRISH FINALLY CAPTURE FIRST BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTES: Charleston Catholic won its first ever state baseball championship by beating Magnolia 9-8. Catholic had come up empty on eight state tournament trips in the previous 12 seasons.
15 HURRICANE TAKES FIRST SOFTBALL TITLE
NOTES: Hurricane won the school’s first state softball championship by beating Wheeling Park in the title game. Courtney Rogers fired a five-hit shutout and drove in two runs in the win.
16 WAYNE WINS 2ND STRAIGHT AA SOFTBALL TITLE
NOTES: Wayne won its second consecutive state softball championship by taking down James Monroe 5-1 in the title game. The Pioneers finished the year with a 29-6 record.
17 BUFFALO TAKES THIRD STRAIGHT SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NOTES: Buffalo continued its softball dominance in Class A with a 1-0 win over Moorefield in the championship game – its third straight title. The Bison finished the year with a 34-4 record overall.
18 HUNTINGTON PREP’S ANDREW WIGGINS PICKS KANSAS
NOTES: One of the bigger college basketball national stories in 2013 centered around the recruitment of Huntington Prep’s Andrew Wiggins, who ultimately chose to attend Kansas.
19 LEVI COOK TRANSFERS TO HUNTINGTON PREP
NOTES: Liberty Raleigh standout and WVU basketball commitment Levi Cook made headlines back in August when he announced he would be playing this season with Huntington Prep. Head coach Rob Fulford had previously been against taking instate players, but made an exception for Cook.
20 MORGANTOWN’S BROWN, WOLFLEY COMMIT TO WVU
NOTES: Instate D-I recruits always garner a little more attention in the Mountain State – particularly when it involves WVU. A couple of Morgantown standouts pledged to the Mountaineers over the summer in 2014 offensive line commitment Amanii Brown (70) and 2015 tight end commitment Stone Wolfley (88).

Those are just some of the top stories and championship runs from around the state in 2013 – plenty more could be added on. What others would you add to the list?

GW boys soccer completes 24-0-1 AAA season, and finishes ranked #20 in USA. 6 First Team All State Players. State Player of Year in 3 Categories. Plays 7 of top 10 teams in state, most on the road. Not in the top 20 stories?

Here's a trivia question for U folks in 2012-2013 school year the all state captins for class A in football, Boys Basketball and baseball. All came from the same school what school was that

  • Michael Goddard

Before 2013, Greenbrier West had only one team state title (basketball in '92) in any sport. In wrestling, they had five individual champions over the 44year history of the program. All they did in 2012/13 was win every tournament they were in. They won the 2013 AA/A State Championship as a team and had three individual champions (Tyler Parker, Malik Boatwright and Dustin Yoakum), two of which were undefeated (Parker and Boatwright), and an individual runner-up (Marquis Frazier).

Gotta admit, a 3rd straight AAA Volleyball crown for Musselman and Jefferson's 4th straight AAA Track title should've at least cracked the top 20. Do you honestly think the following stories were bigger?

Levi Cook transfers to Huntington Prep

Buffalo takes 3rd straight A softball title

Wayne takes 2nd straight AA Softball title

    Chazzy winning the Kennedy

Wiggins picking KU....really? You rarely covered his high school career or Huntington Prep games and his decision cracks the top 20?

    • vb Coach

Musselman did NOT win a 3rd straight VB Title. They won their 3rd title overall...2008, 2010, and 2013.

      2011 Champ was Spring Valley
      2012 Champ was GW

Musselman's win was not more significant than the accomplishment of Buffalo or Wayne...

I stand corrected. I forgot about the eligibility fiasco with girls from MHS trying out for a club team, that was dug up and ruled on before the state Tourney. Congrats to all state champs, we should honor team awards before individual accomplishments.

  • mtbg fan

panhandle had 5 state champs also jefferson 4 peat track appleman girls volleyball

  • ryan

Most dominate team may have been Winfield girls soccer

  • Gunga Din

No disrespect to track folks, they are talented at what they do and their parents care as much as any. Notwithstanding, nobody cares about track until the Olympics and that only happens every four years.

  • shepherd

Yea i agree there should be some track in this. How about Emily Godwin from Buckhannon....

  • Appleman

Also, Musselman's outstanding Girls Volleyball Team. 3rd State Championship. Great job ladies.

  • Hammer

Great stories and no disrespect to these athletes, coaches and communities BUT... Come on
Jefferson High School captured it's 4th straight track championship under Coach Craig Hunter and Dante Price ended his illustrious career with 4 1st place finishes!!

This story should be listed 2nd behind the Martinsburg 4peat!!
