Pedestrian killed in Charleston accident

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston police said a man was killed after being caught between a flatbed truck and trailer on New Year’s Eve on the Patrick Street Bridge.

The accident occurred on the south side connector of the bridge near MacCorkle Ave. at just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators said it appeared James Allen Ward, 55, of Charleston, decided to cross two lanes of traffic instead of continuing on the sidewalk that loops underneath the bridge. The driver of the flatbed saw Ward and waited for him to cross but police believe Ward fell and was struck between the truck and the trailer that was carrying a large piece of equipment.

Police said the driver would not be cited for the accident.
