CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Beckley man was charged with malicious wounding Wednesday for allegedly shooting another man twice during a fight in downtown Charleston in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Michael Underwood, 30, of Beckley, turned himself in to Charleston Police on Wednesday afternoon.

He was accused of shooting John Scott in the shoulder and leg during a fight that started at about 2 a.m. in the hallway of the building that houses Recovery Sports Grill and the Ramada Inn in the Capitol City.

Charleston Police said an argument started when two groups of people were waiting on cabs and that argument lead to the shooting.

Investigators blocked off Virginia Street for approximately three hours Wednesday morning after the shooting as they processed the crime scene.  Detectives were also reviewing surveillance video as part of the investigation.

Scott underwent surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center and was in serious condition there on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said additional charges against others involved in the incident were possible.

The latest news is an Attorney was arested for tampering with the evidence. Seeing how the shooting was over a pizza, I would say Attorney Conrad will be charged with eating the evidence.

  • MoMoney

The shooter is black. The victim is white.
Where are Jesse Jackasson and Al Not so Sharpton today??

"I'm going to bar in the big city so I'd better take my gun...in case I need it...to get a cab..."

Guns 101 - If you are going to a bar with a plan to consume alcohol - a substance known to impair judgment - LEAVE YOUR GUN AT HOME!!!

Guns 102 - If we have to explain this logic to you or tell you this because you don't grasp the concept yourself, surrender all of your firearms because you have no business with one in the first place.

Guns 102B - You can't blame a third party for the actions of an idiot. The problem in this case is the idiot that pulled the trigger - over a cab!!!

Where is Kent Carper calling to shut the Ramada Inn down, just think of all the people in Charleston that could have been shot. Or since this is not owned and run by an African American, does it not need to be shut down?

    • Larry

Does the owner of the bar in Cross Lanes work for AEP?

    • Todd

Yes where is King Kent Carper on this? He couldn't wait to chime in on the shooting at the Cross Lanes bar but is silent on the shooting in Charleston. Maybe its just because shootings have become so routine in Charleston.

      • Aaron

I think it has more to do with who owns the Ramada Inn.

  • Whatamoroon

How funny all of you have let yourself fall prey to media propaganda. All of you have blamed alcohol, bars, the north, the south, and Kent Carper but no one has blamed the persons involved. This is absolutely the fault of the ignorant participants. Apparently they need to find more productive things to do with their presious time on earth.

  • J. Perry

    Lets Party!!!!!

  • Tom

another case of alcohol and guns. Two essential parts of southern living

    • Larry

Yeah, only Charleston WV isn't in the south.

      • J. Perry

Better think again Larry, its not the "Midwest" ....its not "north east"...Its the South. Now head back to the northern panhandle blue dog.

        • Will

I realize this is getting way off subject from the story, but ...... Parts of WV are certainly southern (mainly south of I-64 in my opinion), but most of WV is northeastern. Historically WV was in the north in the Civil War, politically WV has voted mostly democrat like the other northeastern states (until recently with presidents), commercially WV is a strong union state like other northeast states whereas most southern states are right-to-work states, in college football, WVU has always been considered part of "northeastern football," culturally, things like grits, a southern staple, are not common here. I don't know why there is so much "southern pride" in this state when most of the state is not southern when viewed objectively from these perspectives. Yes there are southern aspects like biscuits, sweet tea, etc. That's why WV has been called the southern most northern state and the northern most southern state.

          • Larry

            J. Perry, you really make a great point there, right now the temperature in Sunrise FL is 63, in Charleston WV it's 16. It's interesting you mention weather, since a lot of people move "south" for the warmer temps, no one in there right mind has ever moved to WV for the weather, and if you are near the Shenandoah you're way up north.

          • J. Perry

I live in the south Larry McFly. I can throw rocks in the Shenandoah river from my back yard. No need for travel. by the was,It was 29* at sunrise in Tallahassee fla. this morning. Great weather, right Mcfly??

          • Larry

No, it's true, if you want to live in the south move to the south, the weather is also much better there!

          • J. Perry

larry......bullsh*t ..Weir is missing its village idiot

          • Larry

            J. Perry, I don't and have never lived in or near the northern panhandle. The south starts about NC, south to GA, over to MS, then northeast back to NC. FL is only southern geographically.

          • J. Perry

Pray tell Larry, what was the "ideology" in 1862 of western Virginia citizenry?? Ask someone in Chicago or Boston if they feel West Virginia is southern by the way, might not like the answer you get. West and south of Charleston are definitely southern in all aspects off life. Grits, turnip greens, sweet tea, speech and ancestry. I understand you panhandle carpetbaggers would like to "rewrite" history, but the facts are just that. The aforementioned part of the state were never sympathetic to the split from the Old Dominion. Does Thomas Jackson ring a bell?? How about George S Patton I ? As far as WVU football being considered NE football?? So what now, South West?? Again, Lincoln "installed" a government in Wheeling (No. Panhandle carpetbaggers again) and appointed Pierpont....If you believe that vote was "by the people" you are truly ignorant. Before your jaw drops open and crap starts falling out, please have a slight clue on true history.

          • realitycheck

no one from the South considers WV to be part of the South

          • Larry

That's true Will, and I assume everyone knows WV only exists because the people in what was then this part of VA disagreed with the ideaology of the confederate states.

        • Larry

Go to south GA and ask someone where WV is, they'll say way up north.

          • Joe

            Miami....lol!!

Water so clear you can see to da bottom,

            $100,000 cars, everybody got em'!!

          • Larry

Or they may just tell you to buy a donkey and head north.

          • Uncle SAM

Go to Miami and ask them where south Ga. is and they'll tell you: En primer lugar tienes que comprar un burro y la cabeza hacia el norte chico, sí entiende usted

  • Larry

Kind of ironic, Charleston only had one murder last year, and now the 1st day of this year starts out with what easily could have been, and may still be one.

  • Aaron

I wonder if Kent Carper will demNd this bar be shut down like he did after the shooting in Cross Lanes last week.

    • Dennis

50 people at a "Private" party in Cross Lanes, 30 shots fired, 1 person shot and 0 arrests. I wonder who was at the party and who are they "connected" to?

    • Uncle SAM

Kent Carper is living proof Kanawha County residence are not engaged in County politics.

    • Larry

Hopefully he will, the fewer bars the better.

      • Aaron

        Why?

        • Larry

Ever been to a bar? They aren't exactly full of the most upstanding people, and no good comes from going to them.

          • Aaron

You've displayed with your opinion Larry that you have no room to give in this conversation so why would I bother trying to change your mind?

Besides, I care no more about your opinion on this matter and I do the price of eggs in China.

            Dismissed.

          • Larry

Ok, I answered your question, I see you are not able to answer mine, just know that no good comes from going to bars, the end!

          • Aaron

Larry, you replied to my comment with what was clearly a biased opinion. You tried to disguise it as fact and when called, you tried to turn it on me to disprove your opinion.

Sorry sir but it doesn't work that way. If you want to back your opinion with something credible, feel free to try. I believe you will once again fall flat on your face with more ignorant comments but if you want to, have at it.

Just understand that as I made no claims, I have nothing to prove so unless you have a point based on factual information that merits discussion, please take your asinine comments elsewhere as I see your opinion for what it is.

          • Larry

That's right realitycheck, world would be a much better place if more people were living a Christian life, nobody is perfect but today it seems morality is at an all time low, very sad.

          • realitycheck

i hear a bible thumping at Larry's house

          • Larry

Aaron, your silence is deafening, the reason you cant' and won't is because there is no benefit whatsoever.

          • Aaron

Why would I enumerate anything? You're the one make claims so like I said, it's your credibility on the line to back them up, not mine.

            It's PUorSU time.

            Your welcome.

          • Larry

Aaron, I don't drink, so banning alcohol would be fine with me, now please enumerate all of the many positive benefits to society of people going to bars, thanks.

          • Aaron

You made the comments Larry, you back em up.

Or not, I really don't care as it's your credibility at stake, not mine.

          • Larry

Ok, what good things have happened as a result of people going to bars?

          • Aaron

Yes, I have and I disagree with what is clearly your flawed opinion on both counts.

I am curious Larry, would you ban alcohol as well or is private consumption ok and only public consumption evil?

  • Matt

I think the proper wording is buy and carry a firearm, bring your own "heat".

  • polarbear

    Charleston = Little Detroit

    • Will

      Thought Huntington was Little Detriot.

    • Bill

Not so. Not accurate. The crime rate is actually low in Charleston.

  • Tom P.

Watch out...Everyone is packing heat now-a-days.
