One shot, one in custody after New Year’s morning shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Beckley man was charged with malicious wounding Wednesday for allegedly shooting another man twice during a fight in downtown Charleston in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Michael Underwood, 30, of Beckley, turned himself in to Charleston Police on Wednesday afternoon.

He was accused of shooting John Scott in the shoulder and leg during a fight that started at about 2 a.m. in the hallway of the building that houses Recovery Sports Grill and the Ramada Inn in the Capitol City.

Charleston Police said an argument started when two groups of people were waiting on cabs and that argument lead to the shooting.

Investigators blocked off Virginia Street for approximately three hours Wednesday morning after the shooting as they processed the crime scene.  Detectives were also reviewing surveillance video as part of the investigation.

Scott underwent surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center and was in serious condition there on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said additional charges against others involved in the incident were possible.
