The cookies are coming!

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It’s cookie time! This year the Black Diamond Council of the Girl Scouts is doing more than selling cookies, they’re hoping you’ll donate to the community.

The cookie kickoff took place Friday at the new Black Diamond headquarters on Charleston’s West Side. Girl Scouts will be knocking on doors through the month of January selling boxes of Thin Mints, Trefoils, Do-Si-Dos and Samoas.

Black Diamond CEO Beth Casey said last year as a council the Girl Scouts sold nearly 1.5 million boxes of cookies. The goal is the same this year. She stressed it takes some pretty motivated girls to get the job done.

“We had 60 girls last year that sold over 1,000 boxes of cookies. Those are the girls that have really put those business skills to work and they’ve honed those selling skills, marketing, public relations,” explained Casey. “It teaches them a lot.”

This year a box of cookies will cost $4 and you have a chance to purchase a box or two or ten for someone you don’t know. The Girl Scouts have teamed up with the Huntington Area Food Bank and the Mountaineer Food Bank.

“No matter how old you are or what income level you come from Girl Scout Cookies are always a treat and something we can all look forward to and enjoy,” said Erin Highlander the director of development, for the Huntington Area Food Bank.

It’s as easy as checking a box on the order form, if you want to donate.

“This is the first time we’ve ever partnered with Girl Scouts to do this. I think we’re all just excited at the possibilities of what could come in,” said Highlander. The donated cookies will be divided between the two food banks.

The cookies will be delivered at the end of February. You’ll also see booth sales in March and April.
