Final: WVU staves off Frogs 74-69

West Virginia forward Remi Dibo battles TCU Horned Frogs forward Brandon Parrish (11) for a loose ball during the first half at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Live updates from West Virginia’s 74-69 win at TCU on Saturday afternoon, a victory that saw the Mountaineers (9-5, 1-0 Big 12) end a six-game losing streak in true road games:

West Virginia 74, TCU 69 (Final)
After TCU goes into desperation mode and comes up empty on offense, Staten corals a long tipped-out rebound and hits the clinching layup. Staten finished with 15 points, more than half of those in the final four minutes. Harris closed with 22, while Williams had 12 and Henderson 10. … For TCU, Amric Fields scored 22 and Brandon Parrish added 18, while Kyan Anderson scored 12.
West Virginia 72, TCU 67 (0:34 second half)
First, TCU’s Christian Gore takes a wild shot off the side of the backboard. Then on the next possession, Parrish fires a crosscourt pass to no one. WVU takes over on the out-of-bounds and Staten is fouled with 34 seconds left. State makes 1-of-2.
West Virginia 71, TCU 67 (1:44 second half)
After Brandon Parrish’s 3 pulls TCU within 67-65, Staten answers with a jumper in the lane. After TCU counters with Fields on a drive to make it 69-67, Staten gets free again, driving the right side of the lane. Staten has 12 points now and is taking over in crunch time.
West Virginia 66, TCU 62 (3:56 second half)
Harris has 22 points and WVU is clinging to the lead, having staved off TCU throughout the second half in what has been a one-possession game on numerous occasions. The Mountaineers are 17-of-23 at the foul line today, which could figure hugely in to the outcome.
West Virginia 55, TCU 50 (10:09 second half)
The Mountaineers are enjoying a 28-19 rebounding edge after a stickback by Harris. And Texas Christian’s 3-point shooting has cooled off considerably—heck, it had to—as the Frogs have entered a 1-of-8 stretch. WVU is 6-of-14 from 3-point range, but 0-of-2 in the second half, as it tries to score more from in close.
West Virginia 52, TCU 48 (11:54 second half)
Williams took an awkward spill after being undercut on a runout by Charles Hill. Couldn’t disceern if he hurt an ankle or tweaked the back injury that slowed him last week vs. William & Mary. At any rate, he returned a couple minutes later after Watkins picked up fouls on back-to back possessions. Williams has 11 points and seven rebounds
West Virginia 49, TCU 41 (14:58 second half)
Neither team makes a dent for the first 2:49 of the half until Williams grabs a missed shot for the putback dunk. That came a few moments after the big freshman forward failed to finish a layup attempt and saw the ball carom out of bounds off his foot. Williams yelled in frustration—he continues to have difficulty converting at the rim—but Harris was there in a heartbeat, smiling wide and patting the rookie on the back.
West Virginia 42, TCU 39 (Halftime)
Weirdest facet of the first-half stats: WVU has shot 39 percent, while TCU has made 51 percent, yet the visitors lead. Attribute that to a 7-2 edge in second-chance points and the Mountaineers’ 19-14 edge in rebounding. Harris has 13 points, while Williams and Adrian have scored nine each. Adding to WVU’s fortunate-to-be-ahead feeling is the fact Juwan Staten is only 1-of-5 from the floor for three points. … TCU has 13 points from Fields, nine from Anderson and eight by Parrish.
West Virginia 42, TCU 39 (Halftime)
Williams converts a three-point play after being fouled by Jarvis Ray on a layup. Nathan Adrian follows with a 3-pointer as WVU closes the half with a 19-11 run over the final 5 minutes.
West Virginia 36, TCU 35 (2:10 first half)
WVU reclaimed the lead on an alley-oop from Staten to Harris, who was streaking behind TCU’s zone. That’s 13 for Harris, who is 3-of-3 from deep but only 1-of-4 from 2-point range. Boy, this team has trouble scoring in-close.
TCU 31, West Virginia 28 (5:19 first half)
After seven straight makes from long distance, Texas Christian finally misses a 3-pointer as Amric Fields takes a too-quick 24-footer in transition. I was beginning to believe the Frogs were shooting with a women’s ball. Remember, they came into the game ranked 191st nationally at 33.7 percent.
TCU 28, West Virginia 23 (9:32 first half)
The Horned Frogs now 7-of-7 from 3-point range after Brandon Parrish swishes from the corner. That’s the same corner where Anderson got free and launched the previous 3—the same corner where West Virginia’s bench is situated. So Huggins and his staff had an awfully good look at the defense’s failure to rotate.
Pregame notes
Leading scorer Eron Harris not in the starting lineup today for West Virginia, the first time that has happened this year. Reportedly he’s under the weather.
