Magnolia’s Batton retires after long tenure

NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. — Longtime Magnolia head football and softball coach Mark Batton has announced he will be stepping down from both positions.

Batton, who was also named assistant principal at Magnolia before the start of the current school year, has been the football coach for the past 15 seasons for the Blue Eagles – he also served 13 years as an assistant.

The veteran coach finishes his football coaching career with a record of 119-56, including the 2010 Class AA state championship. The Blue Eagles have reached the semifinals in both of the last two seasons in Class A.

Batton cites wanting to spend more time with his family as a main reason for moving on.
