Changes made in trout stocking list

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A popular trout stream in Preston County is removed from the 2014 stocking list.

Division of Natural Resources officials say Wolfe Creek will not be stocked because of a lack of access to the water. The section immediately downstream from where trout program personnel generally place the fish was posted as private property last year.

Although the stream itself is not private property, the land along the shoreline is owned and anglers cannot access the river across private land without permission. The DNR refuses to stock fish paid for with the license dollars of anglers if those anglers cannot fish for them.

The 2014 stocking schedule began January 2nd and will run through the end of May.

One other change in the 2014 regulations involves a popular fishing area in Ohio County.  Baker Lake replaces Wood Pond as the designated Children and Class Q handicapped fishing area at the Bear Rocks Wildlife Management Area.

DNR officials say Baker Lake is a larger body of water and includes a new handicap accessible fishing pier. The lake also offers better access to shoreline fishing around the water.
