Primary election beginning to take shape

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — A 20-year veteran of the West Virginia House of Delegates said Friday he’s decided to retire at the end of the year.

Del. Tom Azinger, R-Wood, said he will not seek reelection in the 10th District. Azinger, 78, has served in the House since 1994. His son, Michael, has filed to run for one of the three seats in the district.

Former state Senator Frank Deem announced Friday he’ll also seek a House seat in the 10th District this year. Deem, 85, has been in and out of the House and state Senate since 1954.

Former Del. Larry Faircloth of Berkeley County told the Martinsburg Journal Friday he plans to seek a state Senate seat this year. Faircloth, a Republican, said he would file to run for office Monday. The seat is currently held by Senate Majority Leader John Unger, D-Berkeley.

The filing deadline for county and state seats is Saturday, Jan. 25.
