Body of missing Nicholas County man found

NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. — The body of a missing Nicholas County man has been recovered.

Deputies with the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department said Dana Carte, 79, may have frozen to death this week after his vehicle got stuck in a rural area of Nicholas County.

Carte, who was from Craigsville, was last seen at about 9:30 p.m. Monday near Birch River.

It was Thursday before a person testing mine water found his vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet HHR, in a secluded area near Muddlety.

The investigation continued on Friday, but officials said they believed Carte had taken a wrong turn and, while he was trying to turn around, his vehicle got stuck.  His efforts to get the vehicle moving may have been enough to start a fire.

Carte’s body was found nearby in a makeshift tree stand.
