Man found guilty in McDowell County mayor’s death

WELCH, W.Va. — It took a McDowell County jury less than 90 minutes Wednesday to convict Earl Click in the murder of War Mayor Tom Hatcher.

The panel found Click, 27, of Grundy, Va., guilty of first-degree murder with mercy and conspiracy. He’ll be sentenced at a later date.

The jury found Click murdered Hatcher in July 2012 for money to purchase prescription drugs. Click was charged with his sister, Rebecca Hatcher, Mayor Hatcher’s daughter-in-law. She was found not guilty of murder by a jury last year. She faces a second trial on a conspiracy charge later this month.

Hatcher was found by city workers who became concerned about him when he didn’t come to work.
