Clendenin man killed in single vehicle crash

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. – A Clendenin man is dead after he lost control, of his vehicle, Saturday evening, on Elk River Road, in Kanawha County.

Cpl. Brian Humphries, with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, said the victim, Nathan Smith, died at the scene.

“[He] wrecked into a gas meter and then into a parked car and continued into a house,” according to Humphries.

No one in the home was injured.

Humphries said the department’s crash reconstruction team is trying to determine what caused Smith to lose control.

“The road was closed for a little more than three hours while investigators took a look at everything, took some measurements that they’ll need to make the diagrams and to work the math on it to try and determine a speed,” explained Humphries.

He said they’re still trying to determine if slick roads could be to blame or possibly a medical condition. The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

No word on if the victim was wearing a seat belt, at the time of the crash. Smith was a member of the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department.
