Browne calls upset of Cyclones ‘a great win for the state’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In the giddy aftermath of shelling No. 11 Iowa State 102-77, guard Gary Browne suggested it might have been the most complete victory he has experienced in three seasons at West Virginia.

“It’s just a great win for us and a great win for the state,” Browne said. “That’s a good team right there and we held them to 35 percent (shooting).”

The actual Iowa State shooting percentage was 36—still the second-worst performance of the season for the Cyclones, who came in shooting 47 percent.

Browne said the defensive effort has been crucial to West Virginia winning four of its past five games.

“It’s been the defense,” he said. “We don’t have a problem scoring the ball. We’re not focused on scoring the ball; we’re focused on getting stops.”
