Elmore leading the state in scoring as GW looks for tournament run

CHARLESTON, W.Va — George Washington’s Jon Elmore continues to put up impressive numbers on the year as his 30 points per game average leads the state. The senior guard put up 25 points in a Wednesday 70-61 overtime win over Capital as the Patriots are overall now 13-4 on the year.

Elmore, who spent 2011 and 2012 with South Charleston, played last year at Christ School in North Carolina prior to returning back home to the Charleston area for his senior year.

“The competition down there was unreal, we played kids who were going to Duke and UNC and it was cool matching up with them,” he said. “It was definitely and eye opening experience, coming from a small town in West Virginia.”

Earlier this week Elmore put up 38 points in a 75-57 blowout win for GW over Princeton.

“I’ve had a few decent games, and a couple of games that I haven’t thought highly of (this year),” Elmore said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to win, whether that means scoring in bunches or getting key assists. I’m just trying to put my team in the best chance to win at the end of the game.”

George Washington’s Jon Elmore leads the state in scoring with 30 points per game.

George Washington has now won four straight since dropping heart-breakers to South Charleston (63-62) and Woodrow Wilson (69-62).

“South Charleston beat us on a last second free throw – that could’ve gone either way and Woodrow’s pressure got to us,” he said. “We have a lot of young guys that are really starting to peak at the right time and I think we will definitely be able to surprise some people.”

Elmore has already signed his letter of intent to play at VMI – a team that is notorious for leading the nation in points scored year-in and year-out. His brother, Ot, is currently going through a red-shirt season with VMI.

“My dad played at (VMI) and my brother is playing there now so that was a big factor,” he said. “The coaching staff I think is one of the more underrated ones in the country, I kind of like to score a little more than play defense so I fit their style perfectly.”

Coming down the stretch, George Washington has tough outs against Hurricane and Parkersburg South prior to a grueling section and region of postseason action.

“We have a really tough section, it’ll take us all playing coming together and playing consistently (for us to make a deep run).” Elmore said.
