BLOOMINGROSE, W.Va. — Four Boone County Deputies were treated for hypothermia and one of the men they were pursuing died on Friday night when the foot chase ended up in the cold waters of the Big Coal River.

Deputies went to a home in the Bloomingrose community after learning James Alfred King III, 43, was wanted for outstanding warrants in Virginia and Kanawha County was possibly living there.  When they arrived a pickup truck with two men inside pulled into the driveway. One of the men fit the description of King.

Both men fled on foot and eventually jumped into the river.  Deputies got the first man out of the water, but King got away. He was found dead later Friday night and his body pulled from the river.

The name of the other suspect has not been released.

The symptoms of addiction (psychological, physical and spiritual) actually support the disease viewpoint. However, too many alcoholics and addicts use it as an excuse. As far as the story above...I wonder if the King family is planning to sue the cops for doing their job. If they had the chance the cops would have saved King's life and maybe he could have got some help.

    • MOCO man

Addiction is a derivative of very bad decision making..........I find it hard to imagine I would wake up one morning and say I have a disease and I am going to try meth or pills today...........how is that a disease? Someone does something stupid, then they can't stop, then they start stealing weed eaters and chainsaws to support the "disease" , then there has to be an excuse......because they begin the cycle of in prison.......out of prison as I'm sure this person ( not victim) did. I am sure there are lots of money hungry lawyers that will want them to sue the officers but I don't think they will have a leg to stand on.........they didn't shove him into the river............

  • MOCO man

I find it totally amazing idiots on here blame the police!!! If he had warrants he could have done the right thing and turned himself in.....HE chose not to. HE chose to run. HE chose to take the chilly swim. Be accountable for your own actions. HE chose to do drugs.......maybe if HE would have worried more about working and less about doing drugs, this conversation wouldn't be taking place. Calling using drugs a disease is an excuse for not being responsible for ones own actions. Drug Dealer........it is not us tapers job to support you and your buddies through food stamps and other forms of "mailbox money". There are community colleges and education programs that you and your friends could utilize and get an education and you would be less of a parasite to society.........I know birds of feather flock together.........and many of the deceased's friends are into the same crap he was into.......but an education and a job will go a long way. Might even keep people from jumping into frigid rivers as they flee from law enforcement who are just doing their job. Great job officers ..........

Not that I have any business in this. But wouldn't the men chasing the man into the water on a frigid temp. night and then not following thru to find him till Later and he passed away in the meantime,be involuntary manslaughter?.If these men chasing weren't police, so they were judge, jury, and the Executions. Innocent until proven guilty right?. just saying. Rip to the young man! God bless his family.

    • mark

sam, why don't you run and find out! run far far away. people need to take responsibility for their own actions! the police were chasing a criminal.

    • Jonus Grumby

If the men had stopped instead of running from the police, we would not be talking about this. Wise up.

    • DWL

Sam, some more time in remedial law might educate you. Keep smoking the dope - it working for ya!

      • SamWvu304

See. I've spent no time in law school. I didn't have my mommy n daddy standing there holding my hand throughout life paying for my schooling. So I went to WORK. And about the (smoking dope.)What's your excuse? You ever have a beer DWL? Yes...then youve done drugs, how about coffee and donuts bet that hits home huh.druggie.We are all addicts to something. All i was saying is if anyone else wldve chased someone in the frigid water then that person passed away. The aggresor would be charged with manslaughter.

        • Taxpayer

So your view is the police should never pursue a criminal? Just stand around and wait for them to turn themselves in? If he didn't run, they wouldn't have pursued him. The hard truth is that the person responsible for the manslaughter is the one who decided to jump in the river.

  • aquarius

maybe, if some of the posters who appear to know the deceased, spent as much time and emotion getting him treatment in life as they have in defending him in death...he would still be among the living..

  • LEE ARTHUR

Why in the heck would a person jump into a river this time of the year ?

  • TERESA TULLY

I put my whole name out there because I stand by what I am about to say wholeheartedly. This man was caught up in active addiction. Rather than get on here and share your Holier Than Thou comments... remember that this could have been your family member, trusted neighbor, or even a friend. I do not blame James or the Officers for his death because that is the easy out. I blame the dark demon of active addiction. Let his death serve as a lesson to those of you who are still caught up. He will be sadly missed by the many who realize he was more than a criminal... more than an addict. He was a man, a father, a son and more.

    • BIM Job

First of all, I don't claim to be holier than anyone. Now that thats out of the way, let's just think about this a little. There is only one way to become a drug addict, that is to use drugs. If you never make the choice to use, you will never be addicted. Its time we start taking personal responsibility for our actions. Like I said, I'm not better than anyone else. I've just learned to accept responsibility for my actions. As long as we continue to use addiction as a crutch, we will continue to see sad stories like this. We all need to learn there are consequences for each and every action we take and unfortunately in this situation the consequences were fatal. Very, very sad.

    • Jonus Grumby

People need to stand up and be accountable for their decisions in life.

    • DWL

Or you can see him for exactly what he was. A self made addict with no one to blame but himself. Who addicted him? HIM. Good bye druggie.

      • Mickey

Thats hittin hard DWL..But it was exactly what I was thinking. They act like addiction is a disease that you catch...

        • cj

Addiction is a disease. you can't catch cancer does that mean its not a disease? Trust and believe that we addicts don't want to be like we are. we aren't asking anything from you people right now except to stop with your negative comments and let us mourn our friend. we loved him. if you didn't know him then stay out of this. why is that so hard. are you that bored? If you have nothing good to say don't say anything......on that note...james...you was an amazing friend. thank you for letting me know and love you. rip my friend...you deserve it

          • Taxpayer

I don't believe this whole discussion would have taken place if some of his friends hadn't jumped on here to blame the police for his death. Nothing wrong with mourning the death of a friend, but at least be honest about why he died. He wasn't a martyr or a hero, he did something stupid and ended up dead because of it.

  • becca

James lived a fast life. He went hard and had fun. I find relief in the fact that he did in fact get away and did not have to return to prison. He will definitly be missed and mourned by many. This shots to u james!!!!!

    • mark

hey dumb*** he didn't get away he's dead!

    • Tim D.

      Wise up Becca.

    • steve

You would probably sneak drugs to him while he was in jail

    • seriously

Becca - seriously? You would want your friend dead rather than be in jail and possibly receive rehab? GEEZ - how I don't have friends like you!!!!

      • DWL

Becca & Samantha are quality felon friends. Maybe they will join him soon. No tears would be shed. Definitely save on the welfare & food stamp rolls. Only person that might be upset is maybe their meth dealer.

        • samantha

See u got it all wrong DWL. Mr too scared to post who u r. I am the met dealer so looks like Im screwed on somebody caring whether i die or not! I am the dealer because i d get welfare. I cant get housing assistance, check or foodstamps. When i work they take 55% of every check for child support. I did the whole year sober life working an doing right an still couldn't win in court to get my kids. So screw u and every person out there that wonders why us addicts do what we do. I learned to say screw u to everyone an live life an b happy cause this country isn't going to do nothin to help u. This ain't about me anyways. Its about a man who lost his life. For Christ sake has some compAssion an let the man an his family an friends rest in peace. He's gone u d have to keep putting him down to make yourself feel better. Fix Ur own life first u pos an quit buying drugs off me.

          • BIM Job

First, this country isn't here to fix you. Only you and God can work that out.

Second, did you ever stop to think if people like you were not out there selling drugs, your friend may not have been dead now. Quit feeling sorry for yourself, get up off your lazy hind end and go get a real job. Don't tell me there aren't any jobs. The company I work for is never at full employment. You may not love the job and you may not love the pay, but at least you wouldn't be out there ruining your life and the lives of others. You should be ashamed.

      • seriously

Edit - hope I don't have friends like you

  • samantha

Save tax payers a few bucks is justifying a man dying? Just cause he was a fugitive doesn't make him less important. The dam cops need to worry bout rapists an child molesters instead of chasing someone who doesn't bother anyone. He wasn't violent or a bad person. Just liked to get high. Now a man is dead because the dam cops have nothin better to do. Rip jak we love an will miss u dearly

    • Tom wv

The police where just doing there job. This man made a decision which cost him his life. I see several comments about him having an addiction and people saying he was a friend. This may be hard to take but his friends recognized he had an addiction yet did anyone try to help him? Maybe there where but in society today most friends are right there getting high with them. So if you want to place blame then look at yourself also.

    • threasa tittle

u r right samanta an u look atdr an lawyers that r hooked on drugs,,,, an ol yea the upscale community but its ok for them all because they are rich or they think there better,,,,, nope we r all equal but is treated soooooo different an now look wat its caused a dad,,,,, a son,,,, an a great friend,,, a true friend that we have lost r.i.p. kingman

  • DWL

How long can you tread water? Apparently - not long enough! That will save taxpayers a few bucks. Hope the deputies make a full recovery.

    • Brian

Agree DWL! Good job Big Coal River on helping out LEOs. Best wishes to them on a quick recovery.

    • TERESA TULLY

Your comment is disturbing, completely uncalled for and down right disrespectful of the fact that a man lost his life. I would suspect you are one who believes you're life is of more value than his was simply because you aren't an addict or a fugitive. My guess would be you have driven drunk and endangered the lives of everyone on the road. You have probably even had the audacity to attend church. My guess is that you are one huge case of fraudulent misrepresentation.

      • DWL

You would be wrong. I'm alive and he is dead. His cause of death is STUPIDITY!

    • cj

Save tax payers money? Are u serious? Someone lost a son. Someone lost a dad. lots of us lost a good friend. and you wanna talk that crap. id be ashamed. If i was u id keep my name private too.

    • samantha

Who r u by the way. Won't u put ur full name out there if u have somethin to say so i know what pos im commenting to

  • Beaver Sniffer

Bottom line...don't get frustrated over cable...you'll end up jumping in the river and die.

    • mark

      now that was funny!

    • samantha

Its all fun an games but truth is we lost a dam good person an i d think there's anything funny about it. Keep on talkin but look what ur alias is no one takes u serious anyway. Rip brother.

      • cj

Rip james. i love you. they say god forgives all. that's all that matters babe. yea you did some dope yea you was a little wild and crazy.but that's what made you who you was. i don't know why everyone is being so mean on here they didn't even know you. So don't worry bout these people. be happy for these people who don't suffer with addiction. I hope they never do. Again james ....god forgives everything ..so you know ur friends love you...and you go rest now...no more running..no more jail...please rip. love you james. i miss you.

    • cj
