Recruiting analyst thinks Carter can be an effective scorer at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia basketball signee Jevon Carter wasn’t overwhelmed with major-college offers, but a recruiting analyst who has watched him play for three seasons suggests the three-star guard could be a find for Bob Huggins.

Joe Henricksen, who covers college basketball recruiting for City/Suburban Hoops Recruiting Service, joined the “Statewide Sportsline” crew to discuss the 6-foot-1 Carter’s skills.

“He’s just a pure scorer,” Henricksen said. “He’s not a true point guard and he’s a little bit of an undersized 2 guard, but what he has is a knack for scoring the basketball in a variety of ways.”

As a product of the Proviso East High School, annually among the top programs in Illinois, Carter could be toughened up for a transition to the college game.

“He competes at a pretty high level,” said Henricksen, who wasn’t dissuaded about Carter’s ability even though his best competing offers came from the likes of La Salle, Akron, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Valporaiso.

“It’s about fit, it’s about style, and it’s about what he can bring to your program.”
