Stormy Friday morning produces damage, power outages

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Heavy storms knocked trees into power lines in parts of West Virginia Friday morning ushering in colder temperatures to end the work week.

The storms, which included heavy rain, are expected to be followed by clearing skies for most of Friday. Weather forecasters are predicting breezy conditions to continue.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for most of the state until 4 p.m. Friday.

The highest number of power outages was reported in Kanawha County early Friday morning at more than 3,000 customers of Appalachian Power Company. The number had dropped by 6 a.m.

A church building on West 19th Street in Huntington, the Open Door Baptist Church, sustained heavy damage from a strong wind gust. The building’s steeple and part of its roof were blown off.

Clearing skies are forecasted to bring in calmer weather Saturday in West Virginia with temperatures forecasted in the 50s and 60s.
