WVU dips into Florida for another 2015 commitment

Cornerback Kevin Williams (1), a 2015 recruit from Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Fla., committed to West Virginia on Friday.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Scarcely 24 hours after receiving a scholarship offer from West Virginia, Pompano Beach (Fla.) cornerback Kevin Williams became the seventh commitment in the Mountaineers’ 2015 class.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior at Blanche Ely High School has offers from Florida, Syracuse and Central Michigan, while Ohio State, Miami and South Florida have expressed interest. He projects to become a three-star recruit when Rivals unveils its summertime rankings.

“He is a fundamentally sound player who has a very high football IQ,” said Rivals senior writer Keenan Cummings, who announced the commitment on WVSports.com. “Usually that is coachspeak for a kid that perhaps isn’t the best athlete, but Williams doesn’t fit that mold. Williams is a bigger corner but still has the speed needed to cover some of the faster receivers in college.”

Recruited by running backs coach JaJuan Seider, Williams becomes the second defensive back commitment—and the fourth pledge from Florida—in West Virginia’s buzz-heavy 2015 class, one analysts project to be the best haul in program history.

Williams made three interceptions and 76 tackles last season.

“Early on, his feel for reading what the offense is going to do is what stands out in his film,” Cummings said. “He is a technically sound player who appears to be well-coached, and when you add his athletic abilities with sound play, you have an exceptional athlete who could do many different things for you.”
