WVU J-School drops the ‘J’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A name change is in the works for West Virginia University’s Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism.  Starting on July 1, the school will be named the WVU Reed College of Media.

WVU’s Board of Governors approved the change on Friday.

“The name ‘Reed College of Media’ reflects the current and future direction of our college as we prepare students for careers in modern media communications,” said Dean Maryanne Reed in a statement.

“In addition to being skilled in the basics of writing, reporting and content production, today’s graduates must also be able to engage with audiences across both traditional and emerging media platforms.”

Dr. Perley Isaac Reed, an English and journalism professor, founded WVU’s School of Journalism in 1939.  It’s home, Martin Hall, has undergone major renovations in recent years.  At the same time, a Media Innovation Center is scheduled to be completed in 2015 at Evansdale Crossing.

More than 1,200 students are currently enrolled in the School of Journalism’s undergraduate and graduate programs.
