CONWAY, S.C.— Marshall split a doubleheader on the first day of the Costal Carolina Invitational on Friday. Marshall downed the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 5-4 before falling to host Coastal Carolina 10-1 in six innings.
In game one, Marshall built a 5-1 lead over the first three innings. The Herd plated runs in the first and second innings then extended its lead with a three-run third inning. Kaelynn Greene and Morgan Zerkle led of the inning with back-to-back singles and Marshall loaded the bases when Shaelynn Braxton was hit by a pitch. Savanah Webster followed with a two-RBI single and Escareno drove in the third run of the inning sight double into the gap.
UMES rallied with a pair of run scoring RBI doubles in the sixth inning then scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. However, Jordan Dixon was able to strikeout the final batter of the game to nail down the save.
Marshall couldn’t get its bats going in game two. Coastal Carolina took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back on its way to a 10-1 victory. In fact, Marshall was held hitless until the top of the fifth inning when Taylor Estes blasted a home run over the leftfield fence. It was the first hit of Taylor’s college career. That would be the only hit for The Herd, which committed five errors in the blowout.
Marshall now faces Samford and has a rematch with Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
