CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The first Monday of March has brought with it some of the worst weather conditions this winter in West Virginia.
Many of the state’s 55 counties remained under a Winter Storm Warning as motorists tried to get to work on icy and snow-covered highways.
Nearly all schools were closed and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin closed all state agencies for the day.
The state Division of Highways has spent most of its time on primary roads but was reporting difficulty staying ahead of the accumulating snow.
Hazardous driving conditions were reported on interstates 79, 77, 64, 68 and 70. Motorists on the West Virginia Turnpike were dealing with icy conditions.
The National Weather Service said southern counties can expect to see snow through early afternoon. Temperatures were in the teens Monday morning with overnight lows Monday forecasted for the single digits in some areas.
