Elderly woman dies in accidental fire

SCHERR, W.Va. — An elderly Grant County woman was killed in a Monday afternoon house fire according to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Assistant State Fire Marshal George Harms said Dora Lee Hawk, 86, was cooking in the kitchen of her home near Scherr when the fire broke out.

“It was accidental in nature,” Harms said. “Apparently she was cooking. The investigation is not totally complete at this time but from all of the witness statements on scene that’s where we’re at.”

The body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Harms said there was a lot of thermal damage in the kitchen and living room areas with smoking spreading throughout the rest of the house.

Fire crews from Maysville and Mount Storm were on the scene of the blaze along Laurel Dale Highway.
