Still some work to do for DOH crews

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The plows and salt trucks were back out on the roads Tuesday morning a day after a major winter storm dumped up to a half foot of snow on the Mountain State. The roads were still snow and ice covered.

State Division of Highways spokesman Brent Walker said at times on Monday it seemed like a losing battle when the snow was coming down faster than the plows could shovel it aside. In fact, Walker stressed, DOH crews have gone above and beyond with this storm.

“Our crews were out there plowing where we could, treating where we could and throwing down some abrasives when it was just too cold to melt the ice,” said Walker.

Walker said getting the roads back in good shape will be a lot easier with warmer temperatures.

“We’ll let the sun do it’s natural job. Our maintenance crews will continue to treat and put an abrasive and salt mix down,” said Walker.

With temperatures expected to hit the 40s on Wednesday the snow and slush should be history. The big concern is what happens if we get another snow maker?

“We think we have enough [salt] for another storm but it certainly is a struggle,” according to Walker.

He said once this winter is done, there won’t be any extra salt supplies to carry over to next season. Walker called that good budgeting but stressed they’ve never skimped on treating roads this season.
