Softball splits doubleheader with FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla.— The Thundering Herd jumpstarted conference play with an 8-5 win over Conference USA foe FAU before dropping the second game of Wednesday night’s doubleheader 4-0.

Marshall jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one highlighted a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Katalin Lucas. It was her second long-ball of the season. The Herd tacked on another run in the third inning and led 5-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

FAU tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth thanks to a pair of singles, a double, a walk and a hit batter.

Marshall retook the lead in its next at bat. Savanah Webster and Raquel Escareno led off the inning with back-to-back doubles and Alyssa Cook’s two-RBI single put The Herd 8-5.

The Herd’s bats were quoted in the second game of the doubleheader. Both teams were held scoreless into the third inning when FAU broke out for three runs. The Owls tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Meanwhile, The Herd stranded five runners on base through seven innings.
