Amber Alert cancelled; 11-year-old girl found safe

FLORENCE, S.C., — An 11-year-old Maryland girl was found safe Friday night in Florence, South Carolina cancelling an Amber Alert that was issued Thursday in Maryland, West Virginia and then nationwide.

Police took Caitlyn Virts’ father, Timothy Virts, into custody. He’s also wanted in connection with the murder of the girl’s mother, Bobbie Jo Cortez, 36, of Baltimore.

West Virginia State Police issued the Amber Alert Thursday night after it was learned Timothy Virts had some connection to McDowell County. In fact, it was later learned he had worked there as late as last year. Baltimore police said Friday afternoon they didn’t Virts was in the Mountain State.

Timothy Virts was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Listed hours before he was arrested late Friday.
