FAU six-run inning too much for Herd

BOCA RATON, Fla.—A six-run fifth inning was too much for Marshall to overcome and FAU clinched the rubber match in the first conference series of the season 9-6.

The Owls piled up nine hits, five singles, and took advantage of a Thundering Herd error to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Until that point the game was tied at 3-3.  FAU struck first plating two runs in the first. Marshall tied the game in the top of the third on a two-RBI single off the bat of Savanah Webster.

FAU retook the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Owls got a pair of runners on board with back-to-back singles then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly.

Shaelynn Braxton tied the game again in the fourth with a solo bomb on the first pitch of the inning. Marshall took its only lead of the game when Kristina Braxton drove in Katalin Lucas who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Marshall chipped away at the FAU lead in the seventh inning plating a pair of runs but the Owls’ six-run fifth inning was too much.

Marshall is staying in South Florida to compete in FAU’s Parents’ Weekend Tournament Friday morning. The Herd will face No. 14 South Alabama and Michigan State at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.
