HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Redshirt Freshman catcher Matt Reed has been named to the 2014 Johnny Bench Award Watch List.  The award is presently annually to the country’s top collegiate catcher.

Reed has been solid behind the plate through the first 11 games for The Herd. Reed had gunned down five of nine would-be base stealers and has slugged nine doubles.  Reed transferred to Marshall after spending a season at Clemson University.  Marshall had recruited Reed out of high school before he initially chose Clemson.

“He’s been a blessing. He can really catch and throw. His defense is outstanding. He knows the game,” praised Coach Jeff Waggoner.  “He is one of the best catchers we’ve had in this program.”

The list will be narrowed down to semifinalist, with the winner being announced May 15.
