Gee confirmed to lead WVU

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission voted Monday to confirm Gordon Gee as West Virginia University’s 24th president.

“President Gee is a vibrant leader with unmatched credentials,” HEPC Chairman Dr. Bruce Berry said. “We look forward to working with President Gee and the entire campus as we strive to increase opportunities for our students and expand the positive impact of higher education on West Virginia communities.”

The university’s Board of Governors voted unanimously March 3 to recommend Gee’s hiring, and a WVU staff group voiced its approval.

“Classified staff are very pleased that Dr. Gee has accepted the full time position, as president, of West Virginia University,” said WVU staff council chair Lisa Martin.

Gee, hired in December as interim president, announced he would accept the job last Tuesday.

Martin said Gee has been very involved with classified staff from his first day on the job. “From the beginning … he has always been a proponent of classified staff,” she said.

Martin said staff council has had productive monthly meetings with Gee: “(He’s) absolutely in tune with everything we’ve presented to him.”

The HEPC said Gee will work under his current contract until June 30 and then sign a new two-year deal. The details are still being finalized.
