MOREHEAD, KY— Marshall plated six runs in the ninth inning but the comeback was too little too late, as The Herd fell to Morehead State 11-9.
Marshall started furious comeback attempted down 11-3 heading into its final at-bat. The Herd’s efforts were assisted by three walks and two hit batters that resulted in two runs in the innings. T.J. Diffenderfer and Eric Escobedo delivered a pair of run scoring singles to draw The Herd to within four.
Aaron Bossi drove in two more runs with double into right field. With the tying run standing at second and just one out, Marshall had a chance to pull out the comeback. Pinch-hitter Matt Reed popped out to shortstop and Robert Fajardo struck out swinging to end the game.
Morehead State did its most damage in the third inning when it plated six runs. Three insurance runs scored in the bottom of the eighth turned out to be the difference in the game.
Marshall used a total of eight pitchers in the contest, with only two working longer than two innings- starter Roscoe Blackburn (Worthington, Ohio) and reliever Lance Elder (Miami).
Freshman southpaw Blackburn made his 3rd career start, going 2.1 innings, allowing three runs off three hits and three walks.
