Public service careers waiting for high school grads

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Not sure what you want to be when you grow up? There are some people you need to talk to.

Tuesday was the second annual Public Service Workshop, at the Charleston Civic Center. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, Division of Corrections, Army, DEA, U.S. Marshals, Charleston Fire Department and the Secret Service all had recruiters on hand to meet with high school students and gauge their interest in careers in public service.

U.S. Army Captain Brian Bolin said the event allows teens to ask questions and get the answers they need to find out if they’re interested.

“Just learning this stuff early on is going to be super important for these young folks,” stressed Bolin. “The fact that we have all these different organizations here to do presentations and set ups to give this information to those individuals gives them something to think about.”

Bolin said the Department of Defense is cutting the ranks of soldiers in the field, but the Army is still looking for a few good men and women.

“We are still recruiting at full force. We haven’t cut any recruiters,” according to Bolin.

He explained its all about filling these public service jobs in the future.

“We want to hire some of the young and the brightest and make sure we have a qualified force.”

Several high schools were set to participate in the Public Service Workshop. However, because of so many missed school days due to weather and water concerns, some schools had to opt out of the event.
