Morgantown upsets No. 3 Huntington in Class AAA

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — No. 6 Morgantown saw its 17-point lead trimmed to five before holding off third-seeded Huntington for a 59-48 upset in the Class AAA girls quarterfinals Friday night.

“We said coming into the night there would be two keys for us: breaking their pressure and keeping them off the glass,” Morgantown coach Jason White said. “I thought we did a good job early of breaking their press and getting easy buckets, and early I thought we did a poor job keeping them off the boards.”

“At the end of the night I thought it all evened out, (and we came away with the win),” White, whose squad is riding a six game win streak into the semis said.

Midway through the third quarter, the Mohigans led 39-22 before Huntington countered with an 11-0 run. With 1:11 left the Highlanders drew to within 51-46, but got no closer.

“I thought we had just enough of a cushion and we kept our composure just enough down the stretch that we could frustrate them and make them come foul us,” White said.

Morgantown (22-4), which converted 16-of-20 from the foul line in the last 3 minutes, was led by Olivia Seggie’s 19 points. She made 11-of-16 from the stripe while Sydney Holloway was 10-of-10 at the line, where she scored all of her points.

“In my defense I’ve had experience in panicking (down the stretch), so I knew that I needed to keep my composure,” Seggie said.

Paige Poffenberger came off of the bench and added 10 points in 16 minutes.

“It was all really exciting, at first I know we all were nervous,” Poffenberger said. “But once the game started it was just like any other game.”

The Mohigans’ bench played a huge factor as they scored 14 on the night.

Huntington (21-5), whose five-game winning streak ended, was paced by sophomore Dazha Congleton’s game-high 20 points. Lacy Johnson narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

“It got out of hand there early and normally we can come back from that,” Huntington coach Lonnie Lucas said. “Morgantown’s a good basketball team and they beat us down the break.”

The Highlanders were plagued with foul trouble in the first half and had three starters sitting with two fouls for significant minutes.

“It makes it difficult when three starters are on the bench three minutes into the game,” Lucas said. “That happens, but we came back and fought hard and got beat by a good basketball team.”

Morgantown advanced to play No. 2 Greenbrier East in the Class AAA semifinals on Friday at 9 p.m.
