Sissonville ousts Summers County 57-47 in Class AA

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With the third quarter about to expire, Madison Jones sank a 3-pointer and sent No. 5 Sissonville on its way to a 57-47 win over Summers County in the Class AA quarterfinals.

The buzzer-beating basket capped a 13-5 run and was a signature moment for Jones, who scored 18 of her game-high 22 in the second half.

“When we came came in at halftime and told them we played terrible and we were up one,” said Sissonville coach Rich Skeen “I think once we got back in it, we felt better. The 3 at the end of the third was huge To hit that shot really gave us the momentum.”

The Indians (22-3), who extended their win streak to nine games, also received big efforts from Karli Pinkerton (18 points and seven rebounds) and Brooke Reed, who grabbed a game-high 16 boards.

“Brooke Reed is the best little big person in the state,” Skeen said. “In my 18 years of coaching basketball, she is the best rebounder I’ve ever coached. She has a knack for finding the ball.”

Senior Brittany Gould, who came in averaging 20 points a game, finished with just 11 points, but added six rebounds and six steals to contribute to the victory.

But down the stretch the ball went to Jones, who made 8-of-8 free throws to keep the game out of reach.

“I was pretty confident with it in my hands at the end,” Jones said. “I’ve been shooting pretty good from the line so I had a good feeling that I was going to make it.”

Summers County (20-4), which got no closer than five points in the fourth quarter, was paced by Whittney Justice’s 17 points. Brandy Morrison recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

“That was a pretty evenly matched ball game, it came down to a few possessions and Sissonville made a few plays at the right time and we didn’t,” Summers County coach Wayne Ryan said.

The Bobcats, back in Charleston for the first time since winning five straight state titles from 2007-2011, shot just 36 percent from the field, including 1-of-7 from 3.

“I didn’t think we shot that poorly,” Ryan said. “I thought we missed high percentage shots that hurt us a lot.”

Sissonvile will take on No. 1-seeded Fairmont Senior on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the semifinals.
