Cal State Northridge hands Musgrave first loss in a year

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Harrison Musgrave suffered his first loss in more than a year as West Virginia fell 4-2 at Cal State Northridge on Friday.

West Virginia, which slipped to 9-6 and managed only five hits, concludes its West Coast swing Saturday.

Musgrave (3-1) gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. The junior left-hander struck out one and walked one. He had a 12-game personal winning streak snapped, charged with his first lost since March 8, 2013, against Central Michigan.

Brycen Rutherford (2-2) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning for the Matadors. His final pitching line: two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Shortstop Michael Constantini finished with two hits to lead WVU, which had a chance to square the game in the seventh.

After Constantini’s infield single scored Shaun Wood to make it 3-2, Cam O’Brien pinch hit with two runners on and one out. But his soft liner to second base with the runners stealing led to a double play.

Ryan Raslowsky finished 3-for-4 and Brett Balkan went 2-for-3 for Cal State Northridge, which improved to 8-12.

The series finale is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. with junior right-hander Sean Carley making the start for the Mountaineers.
