Final act: St. Joseph, Westside claim titles with Class AAA nightcap upcoming

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Championship Saturday arrived at the West Virginia girls state tournament, where six teams remained to play three games for the right to cut down the nets.

Record-breaking streaks were put to the test, while revenge was on the minds of a couple challengers who would like to get their shine as champions.

CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY
CLASS A: St. Joseph defeated St. Marys 83-48
CLASS AA: Westside defeated Sissonville 43-33
CLASS AAA: Parkersburg South (25-0) vs. Morgantown (17-8), 7:15 p.m.

That can’t be more evident than in the Class A final pitting No. 1 St. Joseph Central and No. 2 St. Marys for the fourth time in five years. The Irish (23-3() nabbed their sixth straight title and extended their 83-game win streak over in-state opponents.

St. Marys (24-2) was unable to avenge a 73-32 loss in the 2013 championship game and capture their first state title since 1990.

In Class AA, Westside made its third straight appearance in the title game and took a 43-33 win over Sissonville, which won its last state title in 2003.

The Renegades (21-3) were fueled by Marshal commitment Hope Lester’s18 points and 19 rebounds.

Sissonville (23-4) had a 10-game win streak snapped after upsetting top-seeded Fairmont Senior in the semifinals.

The most intriguing game of the day may be the nightcap in Class AAA, as Parkersburg South (25-0) looks to defend their 2013 title and complete an undefeated season. The only problem is the team that has given them the most fits, Morgantown (17-8), stands in the way.
