Mountaineers close West Coast swing with 14-11 victory

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Ryan McBroom hit his fifth homer and knocked in five runs as West Virginia won a 14-11 slugfest and the series rubber game at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.

In a game that featured 36 hits, both lineups teed off on starting pitchers Sean Carley and Jordan Johnson, each of whom allowed eight runs.

West Virginia (10-6) finished 5-2 on its eight-day West Coast road swing.

“It’s been a long trip for these kids,” coach Randy Mazey said. “It seems like we’ve been out here for a month, so it’ll be good to get back home and sleep in our own beds and get back to familiar surroundings.”

McBroom, the senior first baseman, finished the game 4-for-6, while Billy Fleming went 3-for-5 and freshman right fielder Shaun Wood went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs.

“It’s nice to win a game when you don’t get starting pitching,” Mazey said. “We’ve been getting great starting pitching and you always wonder if the starter can’t go seven innings are you going to be able to win. It’s nice to know we can get into an offensive fight and still win the game.”

Despite allowing eight runs on 10 hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, Carley (3-0) picked up the win. Pascal Paul delivered 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief, pitching around five hits and three walks.

Cal State Northridge’s Johnson (2-2) was chased after just 3 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Chester Pak went 4-for-6 for the Matadors (8-13) with a homer and three RBIs. Ryan Raslowsky and Nick Blaser added three RBIs apiece.
West Virginia will travel to Appalachian Power Park in Charleston to take on Marshall on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
