FIU sweeps The Herd

MIAMI, Fla.— FIU roughed up Marshall ace Matt Margaritonda for seven runs in the first four innings and blew out The Herd 11-1 to sweep the weekend series.

Marshall’s bullpen did not fair much better. Reliever Ryan Hopkins came into the game in the fifth inning and a two-run homer to FIU pinch-hitter Brian Portelli. Hopkis allowed four runs in the fifth as the Panthers built an 11-0 lead.

Marshall’s lone run came in the seventh inning on an RBI single from freshman Corey Bird, who was 2-for-4.

Marshall heads to Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday for a nonconference matchup with Ohio State.
