Investigators questioning AB students after weekend fight at Wesleyan

PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Investigators with the Buckhannon Police Department and other law enforcement agencies were on the campus of Alderson Broaddus University in Barbour County on Wednesday to talk with several students about a weekend fight near West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon.

Wesleyan officials claimed carloads of AB students arrived in Buckhannon and “attacked” a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity following a Saturday night party at the fraternity house which sits next to Wesleyan’s campus.

In the ensuing fracas that reportedly involved 20 people or more, six people were injured .

As of now, Ashley Mittelmeier, the spokesperson for Alderson Broaddus University, said school officials do not have a full picture of what happened.

“Because it did not happen on our campus, we are working with the Buckhannon Police Department, State Police and the Philippi Police Department and we’re assisting them in any way we can with their investigation,” she said on Wednesday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

On Tuesday’s MetroNews “Talkline,” Bob Skinner, West Virginia Wesleyan vice president of advancement, said the information they’d gathered showed Wesleyan’s students “acted responsibly” in trying to defend themselves.

Mittelmeier said AB officials were awaiting the results of the investigation before addressing what happened.  She did confirm some AB students were being questioned as part of the investigation this week.

“If the result is that our students were involved and were to blame, then they are going to have to deal with the consequences that we hand them,” said Mittelmeier.

“We have zero tolerance for our students to act in such a manner and we are going to deal with them firmly, depending on their involvement.”

No charges had been filed as of Wednesday.
